Get to Know the All-New Chevy Bolt
First released for the 2017 model year, the Chevy Bolt created something many of us were excited about: a budget-friendly, highly-functional all-electric SUV that’s incredibly fun to drive. Discontinued following the 2023 model year, Chevy has announced details for an all-new, second-generation 2027 Chevy Bolt that we’re delighted to see.
If you’re interested in affordable EVs for sale that you can get in the next year, then the Bolt should be at the top of your list. With an MSRP starting under $30,000 and a GM-estimated range of 255 miles from a full charge, the Chevy Bolt is something special that could quickly define the affordable EV market (once again).[a]
Power, Performance, and Range
Although the original Bolt helped Chevrolet get its feet wet in the modern EV market, they’ve learned a lot since then (all of GM has, really). You can see this quite clearly when looking at the upcoming Chevy Bolt and everything it’s bringing to the road.
Powering the 2027 Bolt is GM’s X76 electric drive unit, which has been developed in-house at GM rather than by a third-party company and licensed to them (something we see with a lot of other car companies). This drive unit benefits from everything GM’s engineers have learned over the years, and the Bolt is the 10th GM EV to utilize this unit, showcasing just how well it works.
With a 65-kWh battery and a single motor, the upcoming Bolt gets 210 hp and 169 lb-ft of torque, which is plenty of power for a subcompact SUV like this. The result is a vehicle that’s incredibly fun to drive, ensuring you enjoy yourself every time you hit the road. Since we’re still far from release, no range numbers are available from the EPA just yet. However, internal testing and development have resulted in a GM-estimated range of 255 miles from a full charge. Considering the average American driver travels about 42 miles each day, this is more than enough range to get you everywhere you need to go while enjoying the Bolt.
Better Charging Than Ever Before
Even with such an impressive range, you’ll still need to charge the Chevy Bolt (of course), and we’ve come a long way in terms of charging infrastructure in the US since the first Bolt hit the road about a decade ago.
Chevy understands this well, which is why the 2027 Bolt is being designed to support the latest EV charging technology and provide you with plenty of options to help keep your Bolt on the road. For starters, the second-generation Bolt will feature native support for the North American Charging Standard (NACS), a feature previously lacking in the first-generation Bolt. This is actually the first Chevy model with native NACS charging, eliminating the need for an adapter, making charging the Bolt incredibly simple.
The 2027 Bolt features DC fast charging support with a peak charging speed of 150 kW, ensuring you can power up your vehicle quickly. In fact, it can go from 10% to 80% charge in just 26 minutes using a DC fast charging station, making it easy to recharge the Bolt and get back on the road.
The Bolt also supports at-home charging, with approximately four miles of range per hour of charge using a 120V connection, or about 26 miles of range per hour when charging through a 240V dual-level charging cord. Additionally, the Bolt features vehicle-to-home bidirectional capabilities, allowing you to use it as an emergency generator for your home during a power outage when paired with a GM Energy Home System.
Gorgeous Styling and New Options
Although its looks aren’t revolutionary, there’s no denying that the 2027 Bolt has beautiful styling that immediately grabs the eye and refuses to let go. A stunning blend of sweeping curves and sharp angles spills into each other wonderfully across the Bolt’s exterior, creating a striking vehicle that you’ll love driving each day.
You get standard 17-inch wheels, with several finishes available to let you customize the look of your ride, plus seven exterior colors to choose from, so you can get precisely what you want. And for the first time, Chevy will offer an RS trim for the Bolt, which includes unique grille badging, high-gloss Black wheels, and Atomic Yellow as an exclusive color. The result is a compact, all-electric SUV that is sure to turn heads.
Interior Tech Features, Comfort, and More
Moving inside, we find even more to love about the 2027 Chevy Bolt and everything it will bring to the road. For starters, you have a wonderfully spacious interior, despite its subcompact design, with 40 inches of headroom and 44 inches of legroom up front, as well as nearly 38 inches of headroom and more than 39 inches of legroom in the back.
You get more than 16 cu.ft of rear cargo space for loading up with things you need to take with you, plus more than 56 cu.ft of total cargo volume with the rear seats down. Available options, such as heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more, ensure you enjoy every moment on the road.
The interior has been designed with comfort and functionality at the forefront, including a column shifter that creates more space between the front seats. You’ll find a gorgeous 11.3-inch infotainment screen up front, along with an 11-inch driver information center that you can configure to perfectly meet your needs. Physical controls for audio and climate, plus a combination of buttons and touch controls for other features, make it easy to adjust what you need while keeping your eyes on the road. Available features, such as a panoramic sunroof and wireless phone charger, let you elevate your time on the road even further.
Keeping You Safer on the Road
Safety has long been a priority for Chevy; this is evident in their full modern lineup and the remarkable standard safety technology these vehicles include. The new 2027 Bolt is no exception to this, with more than 20 standard safety and driver-assistance features included to keep you and your passengers safer on the road each day.
These include Intersection Collision Mitigation to help reduce the severity of an impact when you are most vulnerable, as well as Rear Automatic Braking and a Rear Cross Traffic Alert with Braking. Such impressive features make it easier to respond quickly to the unexpected, helping to protect everyone around you.
Perhaps most exciting of all: GM’s innovative Super Cruise hands-free driving system will be available for the 2027 Bolt. You can sync this system with Google Maps on the infotainment display, which will help plot a route that takes full advantage of Super Cruise. Integration can even ensure you’re in the correct lane as you approach exit ramps, before giving control back to you.
